Frequently Asked Questions
What basic maintenance should I perform on my bike?
Regular bike maintenance should include cleaning your frame and components, lubricating your chain, checking tire pressure, and ensuring all bolts are tight. For road and commuter bikes, a basic maintenance check should be performed every 200-300 miles, while mountain bikes may require more frequent attention depending on riding conditions.
How often should I lubricate my bike chain?
You should lubricate your chain every 100-150 miles of riding or whenever your drivetrain starts making noise. If you ride in wet or dusty conditions, you'll need to clean and lubricate more frequently. Our selection of chain lubricants includes options for various riding conditions.
What's the difference between wet and dry lubricants?
Dry lubricants work best in clean, dry conditions and won't attract as much dirt. Wet lubricants (such as Muc-Off Wet Lube) provide longer-lasting protection in wet or muddy conditions but may attract more debris. Choose based on your typical riding environment.
What's the difference between chain wax and chain lube?
Both products serve to reduce friction throughout your drivetrain, but work very differently.
Chain lube is ideal for most casual riders. It is easy to apply and can be applied directly to the chain while the chain is on the bike. It does need to be applied more frequently than wax (typically every 50-100 miles) and is less expensive.
Chain wax is for serious cyclists looking to extract exceptional efficiency from their drivetrain. Waxing a chain involves removing the chain and relatively high initial effort. However, wax is much cleaner, lasts longer, and attracts very little dirt.
When should I replace my bike maintenance products?
- Chain lubricant/wax: Replace when the bottle becomes contaminated, develops sediment, or reaches its expiration date (typically 2-3 years after opening). Effectiveness doesn’t diminish if properly stored in a cool, dry place.
- Tubeless sealant (like our sealant product): Replace every 3-6 months as it dries out inside tires. Signs it needs replacement include more frequent air loss or liquid seeping from the tire.
- Cleaning products: Generally stable for 2+ years if kept sealed. Replace if they develop an unusual smell or separate in the container.
- Valve cores: Replace when they become sticky, difficult to depress, or develop air leaks. Check by applying soapy water to the valve to detect bubbles.
Proper storage extends product life – keep all maintenance products away from extreme temperatures and direct sunlight. Partially used products generally remain effective if properly sealed between uses.
