The 3 Numbers Every Cyclist Needs to Know
Every time you ride, your body experiences two natural reactions: you build aerobic fitness, and you accumulate fatigue. The secret to riding at your best is managing the balance between the two so you arrive at your target event with strong fitness and fresh legs.
Coaches use a tool called the Performance Management Chart (PMC) to track this. ChainLink breaks this down into three easy numbers:
- Fitness (CTL - Chronic Training Load): Think of this as the size of your aerobic engine. It is your rolling 42-day average training volume. As you ride consistently, your fitness score goes up.
- Fatigue (ATL - Acute Training Load): Think of this as the tiredness in your legs right now. It is your rolling 7-day training load. A hard weekend of riding will cause fatigue to spike.
- Form (TSB - Training Stress Balance): This is simply Fitness minus Fatigue. When Form is positive, your legs feel snappy and fresh. When it is deeply negative, your body is tired and needs recovery.
Understanding Your 4 Form Zones
Here is how to interpret your Form (TSB) score so you always know what kind of ride to do today:
The 4 Form Zones Made Simple:
- High Fatigue (Form below −30): Your body is carrying heavy tiredness. Time for an easy spin or a full rest day to prevent overtraining.
- Productive Training (Form between −30 and −10): The sweet spot for getting faster. You are challenging your body and building long-term fitness.
- Race-Ready Freshness (Form between +5 and +25): Peak shape. Fatigue has cleared away, leaving your fitness engine primed for a race, gran fondo, or fast group ride.
- Extended Rest (Form above +25): You are completely rested, but if you stay here too long without riding, fitness will gradually begin to decline.
Catching Fatigue Early: Heart Rate Drift Alerts
Power meters measure the work you do on the pedals, but your heart rate tells you how hard your body is working internally.
ChainLink watches for Heart Rate Drift during your endurance rides: if your heart rate starts climbing higher and higher while your power stays the same, ChainLink flags that you are getting dehydrated or fatigued. This helps you adjust your pacing before you hit the wall.
